Join us for a brand-new experience as we present London After Midnight, the legendary lost Lon Chaney silent movie now returning almost 60 years later as a full-cast radio play starring Art Malik in the role made iconic by Chaney.
"Hugely enjoyable" – Kim Newman
Join us for a brand-new experience as we present the gripping radio play London After Midnight. Co-writer/director Kenton Hall will provide an introduction to the project – then it's lights down as we immerse ourselves in this acclaimed full-cast audio drama played through our cinema sound system.
In 1927, the silent movie London After Midnight starring Lon Chaney was released, grossing over $1 million at the box office while the infamous “monster” of the piece, "The Man in the Beaver Hat", became a horror icon inspiring designs for modern horror hits. Tragically, the last known print of the film was destroyed in the MGM Vault Fire of 1965. But now, almost 60 years later, London After Midnight returns as a full-cast radio play starring Art Malik in the role made iconic by Chaney.
Directors Jack Bowman and Kenton Hall will be in attendance for a Q&A after the play.
Presented by AudioMarvels, Pocket Universe Productions and Monkey Basket Entertainment.

A 4-week course taking you through the history of Stephen King on screen – from the horror that made his name, to the Oscar nominated dramas for which he often gets little credit.
Stephen King is more than just an author, being amongst that rare breed of writers whose name and style are known even by those who have perhaps never picked up one of his (often hefty) books. Much of that has to do with the extraordinary number of film and television adaptations of his work. Indeed, although a hefty margin separates them, he is second only to William Shakespeare in terms of the number of adaptations that exist, including those with which he has been directly involved.
There are classic works that have become classic films. Carrie, The Shining, Misery. There are films that some might not even realise originate from the horror master's pen, such The Shawshank Redemption or Stand By Me.
You may not know Stephen King as well as you might think. But he knows you.
Course Breakdown:
Week 1: Carrie On, My Wayward Son – The Early Works
Week 2: Stand by Him – Stephen King Branches Out
Week 3: Secret Windows – The Unsung Works

Through stylized recreations, rare archival footage, intimate interviews, and an exclusive original interview with Eminem himself, Stans offers a raw, loud, and revealing journey across his career — and the passionate audience that has grown with him.
Released in 2000, Eminem’s song “Stan” — about an obsessive, unstable fan — remains iconic. So iconic that the term stan was officially added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2017.
In the song, the titular character handwrites a series of emotional letters to Eminem, repeating the line: I’m just like you. That refrain serves as a guiding light for this unconventional and fully authorized feature, which follows a highly curated cast of real-life stans whose deep personal connections to Eminem mirror some of the themes found throughout his lyrics.
More than just an exploration of fandom, the film examines the complicated relationship between one of the world’s most private artists and his massive public persona. Through stylized recreations, rare archival footage, intimate interviews, and an exclusive original interview with Eminem himself, it offers a raw, loud, and revealing journey across his career — and the passionate audience that has grown with him.

A Ukrainian platoon's mission: traverse a heavily fortified mile of forest to liberate a strategic village from Russian forces. A journalist accompanies them, witnessing the ravages of war and the growing uncertainty about its conclusion.
Weaving together intensive Ukrainian Army bodycam footage and powerful moments of reflection, Oscar®-winning Director Mstyslav Chernov captures the war in his own country from a personal and devastating vantage point. 2000 Meters To Andriivka documents a battle emblematic of the broader Russian-Ukraine war — the largest military operation in Europe since World War II — and presents a view of modern warfare reminiscent of battles fought nearly a century ago.

★★★★★ – Empire. A 30 year-old film that speaks directly to our present, Mathieu Kassovitz’s stunning film follows the lives of three young men in the banlieues of Paris.
★★★★★ – Empire
Each month a staff member picks a film to screen at Phoenix, this August Projectionist Sean Carroll has chosen Mathieu Kassovitz’s iconic La Haine, which follows the lives of three young men in the banlieues of Paris.
"I first saw La Haine when I was 15 and I didn't know about the controversy. I didn’t know that Jean-Marie Le Pen, leader of France’s far-right National Front, had called for the filmmakers to be jailed. Or, that when it screened at Cannes, police officers turned their backs on the filmmakers in protest. La Haine isn’t just a film about violence or politics, it’s a tightly made portrait of pressure, identity and disillusionment. Shot in stark black and white, it shows a side of Paris rarely seen on screen, with performances and direction that feel more urgent than ever thirty years on."

After showing as part of the Electric Shadows Festival last year, superb documentary The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru returns due to demand, including a screening to mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day on Fri 15 Aug.
In October 1942, the Lisbon Maru, a Japanese transport ship secretly carrying over 1,800 British prisoners of war, was torpedoed off the coast of China by an American submarine, unaware of its human cargo. Determined to share the story of the Lisbon Maru and its passengers, Fang Li tracks down many families of British soldiers who lost their lives, and speaks to the few remaining survivors who can tell their stories first hand.
Through these survivor testimonies, expert interviews, animation and rare archival footage, The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru uncovers the harrowing journey of the prisoners as the ship began to sink, and highlights local Chinese fishermen who risked their lives to rescue as many prisoners as they could.

To Be Frank is a rockumentary film that follows the life journey of Frank Benbini (Uncle Frank) from humble beginnings on a Leicester council estate with his single working-class Mum, to internationally renowned musician, touring the world with major artists such as Fun Lovin’ Criminals, UB40 and Sinead O’Connor, and recording his own critically acclaimed music.
Fascinated by his insatiable work ethic and infectious personality, friend and filmmaker Steve Baker has been documenting Frank’s career for over ten years, capturing footage on planes, trains and automobiles, in hotels and recording studios, and at live shows of every shape and size – pubs thru festivals and stadia – recording first-hand the unfolding story of Frank's rising star, warts’n’all.
The result is a supremely entertaining film that reveals just how hard it is to succeed in the modern music industry, and how Frank Benbini has done just that against all the odds. One of the world’s greatest singers, Andrea Bocelli has a voice that transcends genres and generations. In this intimate portrait of the acclaimed Italian tenor, Bocelli, for the first time, tells his story in his own words.
Documentarian Cosima Spender follows Bocelli with unprecedented access beyond the footlights to reveal an uncompromising artist and devoted family man with a fearless passion for living.
Despite losing his sight at age 12, Bocelli dedicated his life to music and, after years spent entertaining customers in piano bars, caught the attention of the legendary Luciano Pavarotti, who heard Bocelli’s voice on a demo tape. Bocelli’s life changed dramatically with the worldwide smash hit “Time to Say Goodbye,” his astonishing duet with Sarah Brightman that catapulted him to superstardom.
With hard- fought technical mastery of his voice and his decades-long love of opera — “music’s heaven” — Bocelli would go on to perform on the world’s most prestigious stages and with diverse singing partners such as Céline Dion, Jennifer Lopez, and Dua Lipa.
Through interviews, archival performance footage, and informal gatherings with family and friends, Andrea Bocelli: Because I Believe celebrates the voice — and man — who continues to touch the hearts of millions of listeners around the world.

Leicester Jazz House return to Phoenix with a new season of performances for 2025/26, starting with John Etheridge’s Blue Spirits Trio, led by guitar legend John Etheridge, and featuring Pete Whittaker on the organ and George Double on drums.
Etheridge rightly enjoys a glowing reputation throughout the jazz world and beyond and has been described by Pat Metheny as “one of the best guitarists in the world”. He is a prodigiously gifted and creative player whose approach to music can only be described as eclectic, his range being well illustrated by his years of touring and recording with Stephane Grappelli while simultaneously doing likewise with the legendary jazz-fusion group, The Soft Machine.
The Blue Spirits Trio came about through John’s love of electric guitar and organ combined, and a desire for a vehicle for the bluesier side of his playing. There are plenty of typical swing elements, augmented by soulful ballads, fiery funk outings all presented with warm humour by John.
“No doubting his awesome authority when he touches the guitar” – Guardian
“Never wanted to be star – just a highly respected musician like John Etheridge” – Sting

Silents Synced pairs classic silent movies with epic rock music to bring audiences a unique big screen experience. This reimagining of the iconic Nosferatu (1922) features Radiohead’s Kid A (2000) and Amnesiac (2001) albums.
An unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Nosferatu (1922) is the quintessential silent vampire film, crafted by legendary German director F. W. Murnau. Rather than depicting Dracula as a shape-shifting monster or debonair gentleman, Murnau’s Graf Orlok (as portrayed by Max Schreck) is a nightmarish, spidery creature of bulbous head and taloned claws — perhaps the most genuinely disturbing incarnation of vampirism yet envisioned.
Don’t miss out on the chance to experience this imaginative new take on an iconic horror classic!

Nadine Sierra summits another peak of the soprano repertoire as Amina, who sleepwalks her way into audiences’ hearts in Bellini’s poignant tale of love lost and found.
Following triumphant Live in HD performances in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, Verdi’s La Traviata, and Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, Nadine Sierra summits another peak of the soprano repertoire as Amina, who sleepwalks her way into audiences’ hearts in Bellini’s poignant tale of love lost and found.
In his new production, Rolando Villazón—the tenor who has embarked on a brilliant second career as a director—retains the opera’s original setting in the Swiss Alps but uses its somnambulant plot to explore the emotional and psychological valleys of the mind. Tenor Xabier Anduaga co-stars as Amina’s fiancé, Elvino, alongside soprano Sydney Mancasola as her rival, Lisa, and bass Alexander Vinogradov as Count Rodolfo. Riccardo Frizza takes the podium for one of opera’s most ravishing works, which will be transmitted live from the Met stage to cinemas on October 18.

Extreme Cinema examines the cultural, aesthetic, and ethical boundaries of cinema that shocks, unsettles, and challenges audiences. What makes a film ‘extreme’? Is it purely a matter of graphic content, or something more complex?
Extreme Cinema, led by Dr Connor Winterton, will examine the cultural, aesthetic, and ethical boundaries of cinema that shocks, unsettles, and challenges audiences. What makes a film ‘extreme’? Is it purely a matter of graphic content, or something more complex?
Using a range of controversial case studies — including Irreversible (2002), Martyrs (2008), The Human Centipede (2009), 9 Songs (2004), and Happiness (1998) — we’ll navigate the spectrum of extremity in relation to violence, sex, trauma, and taboo. Alongside close textual analysis, the course will engage with the politics of representation and censorship, encouraging critical reflection on spectatorship, ethics, and affect.
Designed for those with a strong stomach and an open mind, Extreme Cinema is not only about the films themselves, but what they reveal about society, power, and the boundaries of taste.

On May 30, the Metropolitan Opera’s 2025–26 Live season comes to a close with a live transmission of American composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s first opera, a magical-realist portrait of Mexico’s painterly power couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, with libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz.

Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Met-premiere staging of Frank’s opera, a “confident, richly imagined score” (The New Yorker) that “bursts with color and fresh individuality” (Los Angeles Times).
