Chosen by Projectionist Les Hayden. One of the best sequels ever made and a standalone masterpiece of sci-fi action cinema, James Cameron’s 1986 film is thrilling experience on the big screen.
Decades after surviving an alien attack on her ship, when communications are lost with a human colony where she first encountered the creature, Ellen Ripley agrees to return to the site. Joining a team of gung-ho Colonial Marines, they have no idea of the horrors that await them.
"Aliens is peak 80s nightmare fuel, masterfully blending sci-fi, action, and horror into a flawless cinematic gem. It’s one of those rare sequels that stands shoulder to shoulder with the original, and while Alien presents a cold, brooding haunted house in space, for the big screen I can think of no better movie than its loud-mouthed, wisecracking, Pulse-Rifle-wielding bigger brother." – Les Hayden, Projectionist

With his wine business on the brink of bankruptcy Jacques (Bernard Campan) who is divorced, disgruntled and in his fifties, does not have much to smile about. Not feeling quite particularly inspired by the next step in his life, Jacques is close to giving up until Hortense (Isabelle Carré) stumbles into his shop. Light-hearted and kind, Hortense works as a nurse – and is so completely enchanted by the babies she delivers, she is determined to find love and have a child of her own.
This could be the start of something seemingly wonderful for them both but as they grow closer and closer, their pasts begin to catch up with them. A testament to the power of love and a great glass of wine.

A collection of funny films with heart, curated by comedy promoters Popcorn Funnies.
‘Dying is easy, comedy is hard.’ More than any other genre of film, comedy walks a precarious tightrope, requiring all the human insight, character development and razor-sharp writing of any drama but with the additional prerequisites of pinpoint timing and, very often, a healthy sense of absurdity. And yet, too often, funny just isn’t taken seriously.
Not so at The Short Cinema, where we have invited Leicester Comedy Festival Award Nominated Promoters Popcorn Funnies - led by Leicestershire-based filmmakers Laura Wilkinson and Mike Yeoman – to select short films from around the world designed to make you laugh.
This screening will be introduced by acclaimed promotion designer for the UK comedy scene, Paul Banks of Peril Designs.
