Henry Spencer (Jack Nance) is the hapless hero in a dystopian industrial slum. When his girlfriend unexpectedly gives birth to a wormlike creature Henry tries to do the right thing, but crushed by his responsibilities as a father and oppressed by the gloom of his apartment the dark world of dreams start to crash in on his psyche.
