99% Cloudy... Always (18)

An uncompromisingly honest account of the struggles and difficulties experienced by a woman living on the autism spectrum as she faces the conventional standards imposed on her by Japanese society.

“In a world that is always 99% cloudy, we cling onto the remaining 1% of hope to survive.”

45-year-old Kazuha (Sangoumi) is chatty, full of energy, and has a strong sense of justice. At the one-year memorial for her mother's death, she is distraught when her uncle asks if she plans to have children.

Though she brushes his question off with the excuse of being too old, Kazuha has other reservations about having children: she has experienced a miscarriage, and also worries about how her own Asperger syndrome may affect her parenting. When she is advised to try adoption, an already-present rift with her husband begins to grow wider.

99% Cloudy… Always is the feature-film directorial debut of film and voice actress Midori Sangoumi. The film is an uncompromisingly honest account of the struggles and difficulties experienced by a woman living on the autism spectrum as she faces the conventional standards imposed on her by Japanese society.
