★★★★★ – The Telegraph. The latest film from Joanna Hogg, The Souvenir follows Julie, a young student, whose fraught love affair with the charismatic Anthony threatens to derail her dreams of becoming a filmmaker.
★★★★★ – “A cinematic memoir of once-in-a-decade emotional precision and ambition” – Time Out
Julie, a young, quietly ambitious film student, embarks on her first serious love affair with Anthony, a charismatic and mysterious man. Just as she begins to find her voice as an artist, Julie defies her mother and friends to slip deeper into an intense, emotionally fraught relationship that threatens to destroy her fledgling dreams.
Inspired by the director’s own experiences, The Souvenir is a different kind of coming-of-age story- one that illuminates the artist’s journey from ingénue to maker in personal and philosophical terms, a nuanced film about memory, privilege and discovering one’s voice.
The Souvenir is the latest film from award-winning writer-director Joanna Hogg (Archipelago, Exhibition), starring Tilda Swinton, her daughter Honor Swinton Byrne- in a breakthrough role- and Tom Burke (War & Peace, Strike). The film won the world cinema Grand Jury Prize for best dramatic film at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
