Lingui, The Sacred Bonds (18)

Chadian director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun’s stunning drama centres on a single mother and her pregnant teen daughter as they seek an abortion in a country where it is technically legal but impossible to access.

Practicing Muslim Amina lives alone with her only child, fifteen-year-old Maria. When Amina learns Maria is not only pregnant but wishes to abort the child, the two women face an impossible situation in a country where abortion is technically legal but morally condemned.

Director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun explores the depths of the bonds among women, gradually revealing how far they will go to protect themselves and one another in this affecting drama that tackles the realities of abortion within a Muslim culture – a subject rarely broached in cinema.
