Hotter than Bond, cooler than Bullitt, Shaft exploded onto the big screen in 1971. Starring the charismatic Richard Rowntree as private detective John Shaft, the film's huge success ushered in a new wave of blaxploitation cinema.

John Shaft is hired by a Harlem crime lord to track down and rescue his daughter from the Italian mobsters who kidnapped her.

Inspiring two direct sequels and multiple reboots, Shaft became an immediate cultural icon. Perhaps even more enduring than the character itself, is Isaac Hayes' electrifying score. Hayes would go on to win Best Original Song for 'Theme from Shaft' at the 1972 Academy Awards, making him the first African American composer to win an Oscar.
